“Singing Swing”

L’ultimo progetto per la residenza Imagonirmia a Chiaravalle era un ibrido tra un oggetto di uso pubblico e uno strumento musicale.

The last project for the Imagonirmia Residency in Chiaravalle, Milano (Italy) was a hybrid between a public object and a musical instrument.

Nascosta sul retro dell’Abbazia, una altalena costruita con cavi d’acciaio e amplificata da microfoni a contatto si trasformava in uno strumento a corda, la cui altezza cambiava in base al peso esercitato su di essa.

Hidden at the rear of the Abbey, a swing — built with steel strings and amplified by contact mics — was transformed into a stringed instrument, the pitch of which would change based upon the weight put on it.

La gente ha potuto sedersi sull’altalena durante una passeggiata sonora guidata in Chiaravalle, ascoltando il suono prodotto in cuffia.

People could sit on it during a guided soundwalk in Chiaravalle and listen to their own sound via headphones.

Questo strumento è stato poi costruito in quattro esemplari ai Ferienkurse di Darmstadt (Germania), e un brano di musica di nove minuti — “Steel String Quartet” — è stato scritto ed eseguito per l’occasione (video qui). Il pezzo è poi stato ripreso a Malmö ed eseguito da Ars Nova Ensemble:

This instrument was then built in four copies at the Darmstadt Ferienkurse (Germany), and a nine-minutes long music piece — called Steel String Quartet — was written and performed for the occasion (video here). The piece has then been performed in Malmö by Ars Nova Ensemble:
